NASF Letter: Wyden/Crapo/Beutler/Schrader - Support for Silviculture Regulatory Consistency Act (August 17, 2011)

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decision declaring stormwater management systems on forest roads as "point sources" subject to an NPDES permit. The Silviculture Regulatory Consistency Act has been introduced in the U.S. Senate (S 1369) and U.S. House of Representatives (HR 2541) that would amend the Clean Water Act to exempt the conduct of silvicultural activities from NPDES permitting requirements. Today, NASF sent the attached letter in support of S 1369 and HR 2541.

Coalition Letter: Jackson/Darcy - Response to Federal Register Notice /Clean Water Act (July 27, 2011)

NASF joined seven other state health and environmental agencies in submitting comments to the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in response to the  a Federal Register notice regarding Identification of Waters Protected by the Clean Water Act.

Forests in the Farm Bill

all handsNASF is a founding member of the Forests in the Farm Bill Coalition, a diverse group of conservation, forest landowner, industry, academia, and community organizations that first came together in preparation for the 2008 Farm Bill. The coalition has joined forces again to ensure forests have a seat at the table in the 2012 Farm Bill reauthorization process.

NASF Letter: Comments on EPA Rule on Deferral of CO2 Emissions (May 5, 2011)

NASF supports the action taken by EPA to defer the regulation of biomass greenhouse gas emissions and to provide guidance to states identifying biomass as Best Available Control Technology. The complexity of accounting for the net atmospheric impact of biogenic CO2 emissions warrants careful consideration by EPA alongside the USDA Forest Service, state forestry agencies, technical experts and scientists. To that end, we offer the following comments on the proposed rule including the approach, rationale and other considerations the Agency should take into account as it moves toward a final determination whether (and how) biogenic CO2 emissions will be addressed under the Clean Air Act.

National Voter Attitudes Toward America’s Forests (April 29, 2011)

Polling memoCommissioned by NASF, the bi-partisan polling team of Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (D) and Public Opinion Strategies (R) partnered to complete a nationwide survey of voters to assess key public perceptions and values related to forests. The poll found seven out of ten voters support maintaining or increasing efforts to protect forests and trees in their state.

State Foresters Help Deliver National Strategy for Wildland Fire Management

A new roadmap for interagency wildland fire management across the country has been released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of the Interior (DOI). Representatives from NASF played a key role in the crafting of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy.
