NASF and state water, wildlife, ag associations reach out to EPA on forest roads
Posted on Friday, February 3, 2012State Foresters recently joined with state clean water, wildlife and ag associations to send a letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson urging the agency to defend current regulations that support the established success of the state-based BMP approach to effectively manage nonpoint source pollution from forestry activities. In addition, 29 state attorneys general sent a letter to the Solicitor General as he decides if/how to weigh in with the Supreme Court regarding whether to hear the 9th Circuit decision related to permitting on forest roads.
Ala. state forester appointed to Forest Resource Coordinating Committee
Posted on Thursday, January 19, 2012Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has appointed eight members to the Forest Resource Coordinating Committee, including Linda Casey, Alabama State Forester, chair of the Southern Group of State Foresters and a member of the NASF Executive Committee. The FRCC provides advice on private forestry and USDA's programs that assist landowners in managing their forests. USDA is also soliciting nominations through March 2 for an additional eight committee members, including seats for two more state foresters.
Supporting federal funding for green building/wood life cycle research
Posted on Thursday, January 12, 2012NASF and a coalition of partners recently sent a letter to USDA under secretary Harris Sherman and USDA Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, requesting that they allocate funding to the Forest Products Laboratory to support wood products life cycle assessment and other green building research.

NASF urges sound investment in hazardous fuels reduction programs
Posted on Friday, November 11, 2011NASF and a coalition of partners recently sent a letter to Congressional leaders on the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee regarding funding for the Hazardous Fuels program under the Wildland Fire Management portion of the USDA Forest Service (USFS) and Department of the Interior (DOI) budgets. The Hazardous Fuels program serves as the primary source of funding to treat forests to reduce the risk of severe wildland fires.

NASF showcases fellowship images at SAF national convention in Honolulu
Posted on Wednesday, November 2, 2011More than a thousand people gathered in Honolulu this week for the annual convention of the Society of American Foresters. On Saturday, NASF Executive Director Jay Farrell will present an overview of the U.S. campaign for the International Year of Forests, and NASF also prepared an exhibit of images from the IYOF photography fellowship completed this summer. Earlier in the week Jay participated in the Pacific Islands Committee to discuss Pacific forestry issues and resource management.
