Smokey Bear spared from budget axe
Posted on Friday, December 9, 2011A proposed slash to the USDA Forest Service's conservation-education budget was proposed under House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's YouCut program, in which the public can vote each week in favor of various budget-trimming plans. The cut would have eliminated the national wildfire prevention work of Smokey Bear, but was outranked by a rival-budget cutting proposal that would eliminate payments to states that increase the number of food-stamp beneficiaries.
