Celebrate National Arbor Day

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.  John Rosenow of the Arbor Day Foundation credits strong partnerships with the U.S. Forest Service and NASF in the progress that has been made in the conservation of trees and forests.

National Arbor Day was founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872 and is celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates according to their best tree-planting times.

NASF testifies before House approps subcommittee on support for America's forests

On behalf of NASF, California State Forester Ken Pimlott gave testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and related Agencies today on funding recommendations for USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry (S&PF) programs. The testimony follows a number of letters NASF has sent detailing our recommendations on programs including Forest Inventory & Analysis, Forest Health, Wildfire Management and Urban & Community Forestry.

MORE: Also on the docket was Tom Martin, president and CEO of the American Forest Foundation, who reminded committee members that most of America's forests are owned by families and individuals, not the federal government, and not corporations. AFF and NASF issued a joint press release on the value of the Forest Stewardship Program, as well help gather more than 1,200 signatures from private forest owners in a letter asking for continued support of the program.

Protect America's Forests: Invest in Programs that Support Family Forest Owners

In testimony today before the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, of the House Appropriations Committee, the American Forest Foundation (AFF) and the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) reminded committee members that most of America's forests are owned by families and individuals, not the federal government, and not corporations. For this reason, Congress needs to continue to support programs that provide private forest owners with technical assistance to help them make the best decisions to help advance forest conservation in America.

NASF and state water, wildlife, ag associations reach out to EPA on forest roads

State Foresters recently joined with state clean water, wildlife and ag associations to send a letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson urging the agency to defend current regulations that support the established success of the state-based BMP approach to effectively manage nonpoint source pollution from forestry activities. In addition, 29 state attorneys general sent a letter to the Solicitor General as he decides if/how to weigh in with the Supreme Court regarding whether to hear the 9th Circuit decision related to permitting on forest roads.
