Through the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention (CFFP) program, NASF, the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council sponsor the national Smokey Bear Awards to recognize outstanding service in the prevention of human-caused wildfires and to increase public recognition and awareness of the need for continuing wildfire prevention efforts. In the world of wildfire prevention there is no greater honor. These critical programs provide funding for work that makes people and forests safer, through thinning and controlled burn projects on National Forest System and state and private forest lands.

State Foresters Pass Resolutions on U.S. Wood Production Goals, Collaborative Forest Management, and Forest Action Plans
Posted on Friday, September 30, 2011NASF elected a new slate of officers to its governing Executive Committee and agreed on several national policy positions at the association's 89th Annual Meeting last week in Baltimore, Maryland. Policy positions passed by resolution include goals for enhancing the U.S. share of global wood production, enhancing collaborative landscape-scale forest management, and use of Forest Action Plans in budget allocation decisions for Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act programs.
NASF sponsors Year of Forests photography fellowship

With support from the NASF Foundation, NASF has partnered with the National Network of Forestry Practictioners (NNFP) to sponsor a photography fellowship for the International Year of Forests. Recognizing the multitude of people and professions that own, appreciate and care for the nation’s forests, the 10-week fellowship will document the human experience in America’s forests. Fellow Josh Birnbaum’s images will help articulate the benefits we derive from the sustainable management of our forests.
